England Dismayed as World Cup Preparations Hit Snag in Dull 0-0 Draw With Portugal

The English Lionesses were unable to break through in their World Cup warm-up match against Portugal on Saturday, drawing 0-0 at Stadium MK. The Lionesses had numerous chances to score, with Georgia Stanway’s shot from close range hitting the crossbar shortly before halftime and Alessia Russo’s effort cleared off the line by a stunning attempt by defender Ana Borges late in the second half.

England’s coach Sarina Wiegman is looking ahead to her team’s route to glory as Leah Williamson and Beth Mead, both of whom were ruled out of the World Cup due to long-term knee injuries, watched from the stands. With one more friendly against Olympic champions Canada on July 14th and then Haiti on July 22nd for their opening tournament fixture, this is an exciting time for the Lionesses.

For Portugal, who entered last year’s Euros as a replacement for banned Russia, it is a momentous occasion as they face Netherlands on July 23rd– their first ever World Cup appearance. It’s sure to be an eventful tournament for both teams!
