Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn from Wimbledon this year due to a wrist injury, the Australian announced on Sunday just before the commencement of the grasscourt grand slam. In an Instagram post, Kyrgios said he had tried his utmost to be ready for Wimbledon, but was unable to do so after experiencing pain in his wrist during the week of Mallorca. Upon further scrutiny, it was revealed that Kyrgios had suffered a torn ligament in his wrist.
Kyrgios has endured a tough road to fitness since undergoing knee surgery earlier this year and losing in his comeback match against Wu Yibing in the Stuttgart Open first round last month. His plans were further derailed by the theft of his car which resulted in him sustaining a foot injury and having to skip the French Open as well as events in Halle and Mallorca.
The news of Kyrgios’ withdrawal adds another chapter to his eventful fairytale at Wimbledon. He came close to winning the much sought-after title last year when he made it to the final showdown with Novak Djokovic.
Unfortunately, hopes for another remarkable run at the tournament have been dashed this time around.
